ABT Sportsline Bringing Audi Into Formula E Fold

Just the Facts:
  • Audi Sport ABT Formula E is the seventh team to enter the new Formula E electric racing series.
  • ABT Sportsline and team principal Hans-Jürgen Abt will field the team.
  • Audi, the dominant make in road racing, will provide support and its name to the team.

KEMPTEN, Germany — ABT Sportsline, which has helped to power Audi to the pinnacle of road racing through its success in the German Touring Car series DTM, has committed to compete in the FIA Formula E Championship for electric-powered racing cars.

The new team will be named Audi Sport ABT Formula E Team.

"Participating in the new FIA Formula E Championship marks a completely new chapter in our more than 60-year motorsport history," said team principal Hans-Jürgen Abt in a statement. "As a company that has been active in the field of regenerative powertrains and electric mobility we're convinced of the series' concept."

Audi, which stopped short of becoming an official participant, pledged a measure of support.

"We've been watching this new project of the FIA with great interest and are delighted that ABT Sportsline, as one of our close and long-standing partners, will be involved right from the beginning," said Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsports, in a statement. "We're keeping our fingers crossed for the squad on tackling this new challenge and are planning to support its commitment with drivers from our factory lineup if required."

The new team joins American IndyCar teams Andretti Autosport and Dragon Racing, a French entry which includes four-time Formula 1 champion Alain Prost as co-owner, China Racing and Super Aguri from Asia and Britain's Drayson Racing.

That makes a commitment of seven two-car teams, with three spots open on the anticipated grid of 20 cars.

Formula E will feature single-seat open-wheel cars competing on city street circuits in major international cities. It is scheduled to launch in September 2014.

Edmunds says: Even though this is something less than an official works team, Audi is a significant name to be added to the Formula E mix.
