The 2028 Volvo XC90 PHEV Gets Way More Range, Looks the Same

A new plug-in hybrid system brings big gains

  • What's new: The Volvo XC90 plug-in gets a new long-range hybrid system.
  • Why it matters: The new battery and software more than double the old XC90 PHEV's range.
  • Edmunds says: We don't know what the new X5 PHEV's EV-only range figure will be, but this Volvo is the class leader in that regard. For now.

The 2028 Volvo XC90 won't look any different from the current car, and that's because Volvo recently gave its long-standing flagship a very thorough reworking not that long ago. Instead, for 2028, the changes are all about the plug-in hybrid system that lurks beneath the handsome sheetmetal.

Much like the XC60 (which has also been reworked for 2028), the big news is the XC90's plug-in hybrid system. It's the same as what you'll find in its smaller sibling. A 37.9-kWh (usable) battery pack is hidden beneath the floor of the 90 and grants up to 73 miles of EV-only range. That is way up from the 33 miles the previous XC90 PHEV could manage.

Buyers who don't necessarily feel the need to go PHEV still have options. The B5 models still use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder together with a mild hybrid system that makes a combined 247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque and returns 25 mpg combined. The more powerful B6 is twin-charged (there's a turbo and a supercharger), not to mention it's also a mild hybrid. All told, the system here makes a punchier 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy only suffers slightly, at a Volvo-estimated 23 mpg combined.

The rest of the XC90 remains very much unchanged. Newer models will get Google Gemini built in, while older ones will get access to the AI assistant via an over-the-air update. Beyond that, the interior will feel identical, but that's no bad thing — the XC90 has always been a sumptuous place to spend time.

Really, the gains for 2028 are exclusive to that plug-in hybrid system. If that doesn't interest you but an XC90 does, there's no reason to wait. If you are the type that charges at home and doesn't have an ultra-lengthy daily commute, the new long-range PHEV might be worth waiting for. Production starts at the end of this year, so you can expect to see the 2028 XC90 on lots in early 2027.
