The Volkswagen ID Tiguan Replaces the ID4, Comes Out in 2027

VW's EV crossover was in serious need of a rework, and it looks like that's what we're getting

  • What's new: The name of this new VW is one we've never seen before — meet the ID Tiguan, the ID4's replacement.
  • Why it matters: This means VW isn't giving up on EVs in the States, and it's taking the updates to the now-dead ID4 seriously. It needs to if it wants to compete with the Rivian R2, Tesla Model Y and others.
  • Edmunds says: VW's recent EV efforts in Europe have looked promising, and this will be our first taste of what that's like. We're going in cautiously optimistic.

Despite news that the ID Buzz will skip the 2027 model year and that the ID4 is long gone, Volkswagen isn't giving up on EVs in the States. Today, VW confirmed that the ID4's successor will be called the ID Tiguan, and that it's getting a major overhaul to go with that new name.

A Volkswagen spokesperson told Edmunds: "The ID. Tiguan is planned to succeed the ID.4 in the North American market. Following its European launch in early 2027, Volkswagen will share North American timing and additional market-specific details in due course."

The name change follows the new strategy that VW has been taking with its electric vehicles in other markets. The ID Polo and ID Cross are a bit more in line with the way the brand used to name its cars. The ID Tiguan makes a lot of sense to bring to the States since it very obviously aligns this EV with the gas-powered Tiguan, VW's best-seller here in the U.S.

VW is clearly taking the change seriously. The photos seen here, despite the very yellow camouflage, suggest major changes to the bodywork. There are some bits of the ID4 that are clearly still there, but it already obviously does enough to set itself apart from that car.

We also expect the interior to be the first VW in a long time to feature real, physical climate controls, and more buttons for, well, everything. VW has gotten a lot of flak for moving in the touch-sensitive-everything direction, and it's clear it got the message. Hopefully this is the start of the return to the high-quality cabins we once became so used to from the German brand.

The ID Tiguan is coming soon

We won't have to wait long to get our first good look at the ID Tiguan without the camouflage. VW says the global unveil will take place in early October, and that's when we'll know what the interior looks like, what we can expect in terms of range, and much more. Stay tuned.
