Rivian Gives the People What They Want: Captain's Chairs for the 2027 R1S

The electric automaker also simplified its trim lineup and introduced a new package

Why it matters: Captain's chairs are awesome, and Rivian says it's been the most requested feature since the R1S launched.
Edmunds says: The other changes to the R1T and R1S lineup are small, but we're glad to see the brand listening to its buyers' wants.

Lover of captain's chairs, rejoice: You can now get captain's chairs on the 2027 Rivian R1S SUV. The three-row electric SUV previously came in one flavor: a bench in the second row and seating for seven. But now you can get a pair of captain's chairs so long as you also select a suitable trim or interior package.

The captain's chairs highlight a small set of updates from the American automaker. You can get them on the base trim (Premium) SUV, so long as you pair it with the Sound + Vision package. There are two levels of that package that, along with the captain's chairs, cost $4,000 and $6,500.

Upgrading to a Performance or Quad trimmed Rivian R1S allows you to add the chairs for $1,500. There are a pair of interior packages (Ocean Coast Signature and Slate Sky Signature) that are exclusive to those selecting captain's chairs.

Simplified trims for the R1T and R1S

The three trims for the R1T and R1S have been changed from motor-focused (Dual, Tri and Quad) to Premium, Performance and Quad. Even the Premium trim gets you gobs of power, with 533 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque.

A Long Range option is available on the Premium trim, offering an EPA-estimated driving range of 410 miles on the R1S and 420 miles of range on the R1T. Both vehicles underperformed their EPA estimates in the Edmunds EV Range Test but still delivered impressive results.

New color and wheel package for the R1T

A 20-inch all-season wheel and tire combination is now a standard feature on the R1T Premium and available as a no-cost option on the Performance trim. These hurt your range to the tune of 40 miles on the extended-range R1T, according to the EPA estimate.

You can also get the Esker Silver paint job first introduced on the R2 with either R1 model. The R1S starts at $83,990 and the R1T starts at $79,990. The 2027 models are available to order.
