2027 Honda Passport TrailSport Debuts Taller, Tougher Suspension

After one model year, Honda has redesigned the suspension on its off-road SUV and tweaked content levels

  • What's new: The 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport has a new suspension with increased ground clearance, more standard tech and a new exterior color.
  • Why it matters: This generation of Passport only debuted a year ago, showing Honda is serious about keeping its rugged SUV competitive.
  • Edmunds says: The 2027 updates don't dramatically alter Honda's largest two-row SUV, but they should improve what is already one of our favorite midsize SUVs.

Honda today revealed the 2027 Passport TrailSport. You'd be forgiven for thinking it looks the same as last year's model, which was when this fourth-generation model debuted. While there are indeed visual changes in the latest Passport's sophomore year, the bigger news is a redesigned suspension aimed at even more off-road capability.

The headline figure is an additional 1.38 inches of ground clearance, giving the TrailSport a grand total of 9.65 inches. This naturally has a knock-on effect on approach, departure, and breakover angles; the latter is up 3 degrees to 20 degrees, while the others both increase 2 degrees to 23 degrees. Honda points out this taller ride height beats the likes of the Subaru Outback Wilderness (9.5 inches) and Ford Bronco Sport Badlands with the Sasquatch package (8.8 inches), as well as most Toyota 4Runners — just not the TRD Pro or Trailhunter, which both boast 10.1 inches of clearance.

Honda says it didn't just bump up the ride height and call it job done. Engineers tweaked or replaced roughly two-thirds of the suspension parts for the 2027 change: springs, dampers, anti-roll bars and more. Engineers even redesigned the front driveshafts and subframe. This means not only more clearance, but also more wheel articulation when the Passport is angling its way over a gnarly trail.

Folks who do take the TrailSport on the dirt will appreciate that the TrailWatch camera system is now available on all TrailSport trims, not only the top Elite. TrailWatch offers a full 360-degree view around the Passport along with overlays showing the tire paths, and it's accessible via a handy button on the wiper stalk. A heated steering wheel is also included on all Passport TrailSport models now.

It isn't all about the trails either: Honda also says the '27 Passport has "improved steering feel and response." We'll be sure to vet that claim once we get behind the wheel; after all, we did have one in our One-Year Road Test fleet, so we have plenty of experience with the current car to compare it to.

There are visual tweaks, ranging from mild to Spot the Difference. Honda says there are "more pronounced" fender flares, but they look the same to us; the reprofiled lower front bumper has the subtlest of indents in the central section now. There are also amber marker lights in the (nonfunctional) hood scoop; at least that keeps the theme consistent, since the Passport isn't actually wide enough to need them.

There is also the excellent Smoke Blue Pearl exterior paint pictured here, which the Passport picks up from the 2026 Honda Pilot. The available Blackout package swaps many of the metallic trim pieces for — you guessed it — black versions. The 2027 Honda Passport lineup will begin arriving in dealerships across the U.S. in late September. Expect pricing details around the same time.
