2025 Toyota Prius Gets New Nightshade Package, Still Offers 57 MPG
Incremental updates should make an already great hybrid even better
The 2025 Toyota Prius is an absolute stunner, both in the fuel efficiency department and, of course, in terms of looks. As part of a refresh making its debut today, Toyota is offering a new Nightshade grade that adds a seriously spicy mustard yellow color called Karashi, alongside a handful of other meaningful updates that benefit the full Prius range.
If you aren't fluent in Toyota, its Nightshade package takes the not-quite-top-level XLE trim and adds a whole pile of gloss black inside and out, plus some unique 19-inch dark alloy wheels. Inside, you'll find eight-way power-adjustable black SofTex seats along with a splash of faux carbon-fiber trim on the dash.

There are some nice changes inside the Prius for 2025. The 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard on Nightshade and Limited trims, with the XLE and lower specs getting an 8-inch touchscreen; both touchscreens have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a voice assistant. A JBL premium stereo is standard on the top-tier Limited.
Also standard is Toyota's very robust Safety Sense 3.0 suite of driver assistance features. These include a precollision braking system with pedestrian warning, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance with lane trace assistance, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beams and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA). PDA is interesting because it will do things like gently brake when the car enters a corner, help maintain distance between the Prius and the car in front of you, and provide minor steering assistance.
Other safety tech that isn't part of Safety Sense 3.0 but comes as standard includes blind-spot warning and safe exit assist, which aims to prevent you from opening your door into a cyclist or oncoming traffic. A 360-degree camera system and automated parking assistance are optional.
Other highlights for the 2025 Prius hybrid include a combined power output of up to 196 horsepower and 152 lb-ft of torque from a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four and electric motor, as well as an optional fully electric all-wheel-drive mode that uses a rear-axle motor to provide extra grip when needed. The standard Prius will return an EPA-estimated 57 mpg combined while adding that rear motor drops things to a still-very-respectable 54 mpg.
The 2025 Toyota Prius starts at just $29,485, including a $1,135 destination charge. Tack on $1,400 if you want all-wheel drive, and the new Nightshade trim starts at $33,630, also including destination.
