FRANKFURT, Germany — A long-wheelbase version of the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan compact SUV will roll into Volkswagen dealerships in late 2016, Volkswagen of America said on Monday. The second-generation Tiguan debuts at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show.
The stretched Tiguan will be available with three rows and can seat seven passengers. Cargo space will increase.
This is VW's first SUV based on the automaker's flexible MQB architecture. The 2017 Tiguan is longer, wider and lower than the current model.
VW is calling the Tiguan's debut "the beginning of an SUV product offensive."
Volkswagen of American spokesman Mark Gillies said U.S. specifications, including powertrain information on the long-wheelbase Tiguan, are not available now.
Pricing will be available at a later date.
Connectivity and driver assistance features will be hallmarks of the new Tiguan.
Assistance systems include a radar-based feature that will apply the brakes if a pedestrian walks in front of the Tiguan. Connectivity services include automatic accident notification, online traffic and parking space information.
Edmunds says: The Volkswagen Tiguan was sized originally for European cities. This grown-up version should move the Tiguan high up on lots of American shopping lists.
