2017 Volkswagen Passat Earns Five-Star Safety Rating From NHTSA

WASHINGTON — The carryover 2017 Volkswagen Passat midsize sedan earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On sale now at Volkswagen dealerships, the 2017 Passat received four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, electronic stability control and a rearview camera.

Forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking are now standard across all trims.

A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is now standard on R-Line and SE models.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not rated the 2017 Passat. However, the Passat was refreshed for the 2016 model year and that version earned the Institute's highest Top Safety Pick+ award. The Passat received "good" scores in all Institute crash tests.

Key Passat competitors include the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Kia Optima and Mazda 6.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers keeping score should note that the 2017 Honda Accord and Mazda 6 also earned the highest five-star safety rating from NHTSA. The 2017 Ford Fusion and Kia Optima have not been rated.
