2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Alltrack To Feature All-Wheel Drive: 2015 New York Auto Show

NEW YORK — The 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Alltrack, a new all-wheel-drive wagon, will arrive at Volkswagen dealerships in 2016, Volkswagen of America announced ahead of the 2015 New York Auto Show.

Pricing, specific launch timing, fuel economy estimates and technical specifications were not disclosed.

The Golf SportWagen Alltrack will compete with other all-wheel-drive wagons and crossovers, including the Audi Allroad, Honda Crosstour and Subaru Outback.

Details on the latest version of the SportWagen include a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, an inch more of ground clearance compared to the base SportWagen, wheel arch moldings, flared side sills, new bumpers and a more luxurious cabin.

"In combination with the higher ground clearance, this 4Motion all-wheel-drive system helps to give the newest Golf SportWagen the off-road capability and load-carrying capacity of a compact SUV, along with the on-road manners and fuel economy of a compact wagon," said Volkswagen in a statement.

The company said that its dealers and customers asked for a Golf SportWagen with all-terrain capability.

The 2015 Golf SportWagen replaces the outgoing Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen.

Golf SportWagen goes on sale in April and is the last of the new Golf models to arrive.

Edmunds says: It's going to be a long wait for the SportWagen Alltrack. But car shoppers looking for an all-wheel-drive alternative to SUVs and crossovers will appreciate having another wagon choice in the future.
