Mazda notes that pricing and pre-ordering details will be announced in the coming weeks.
The U.S.-only MX-5 Miata RF Launch edition, limited to 1,000 units, will be offered first to "Mazda's most loyal customers," who will be notified by email when pre-orders begin. After that, ordering will open to the general public.
Based on the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF that was introduced earlier this year, the Launch Edition shares that model's retractable fastback roof, as well as its Machine Gray Metallic paint color, Auburn Nappa leather interior trim and hand-painted black roof panel.
The Launch Edition adds special badging, plus a bonus: a custom-designed, numbered 42-millimeter Tourneau watch.
The only choice buyers will have is to specify either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
"Rarely does any automaker have a vehicle that garners the sort of loyalty and enthusiasm MX-5 generates — something we don't take lightly," said Robert Davis, Mazda's senior vice president of U.S. Operations, in a statement. "MX-5 RF is the next chapter of this storied model line, and we can't think of a better way to give back than to first offer this bespoke Launch Edition to those who have stuck with us, believing in our mission to deliver the best-driving vehicles on the road."
Those who miss out on the Launch Edition will still be able to get their hands on an MX-5 Miata RF with the retractable hardtop. Available in Grand Touring and Club trim levels, those models will also begin arriving at Mazda dealerships early next year.
Edmunds says: Mazda loyalists will be treated to first crack at the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition, but there should be plenty of other RF and convertible models available.
