It will arrive at Lincoln dealerships several months later.
Matt VanDyke, director of global Lincoln, told Edmunds Continental buyers will be offered a choice of ultra-luxury interiors, not just the chrome-laden interior shown on the concept version.
The concept's interior created quite a buzz at the Detroit show, with the shiny metal covering the door panels, door handles, console, portions of the instrument panel and other surfaces.
"A lot of people who saw the concept didn't see wood or some other treatments that are customer preferences," VanDyke said in an interview this week. "We will have absolutely stunning and gorgeous wood treatments in the production vehicle, as well as high-fashion aluminum and other metallic treatments that go along with some of the unique themes that are planned."
"It will be a very different product than an MKS and it will transact in a very different way than MKS," VanDyke said.
The 2015 MKS starts at $39,775 according to the vehicle configurator at www.lincoln.com.
The 2017 Continental will share a front-wheel-drive platform with the upcoming redesigned Ford Fusion midsize sedan. The platform's width and length can be altered to build both midsize and full-size vehicles.
All-wheel drive is expected to be available on the new Lincoln flagship.
Lincoln earlier confirmed that the Continental will be powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that will not be used in any Ford products.
The Continental and two yet-to-be-revealed vehicles will round out the expansion of the Lincoln brand by 2020.
