2017 Ford GT Can Be Ordered With Optional Carbon-Fiber Wheels

DEARBORN, Michigan — When the 2017 Ford GT supercar arrives at Ford dealerships in December, buyers can check the box for optional carbon-fiber wheels, Ford said on Tuesday.

The special lightweight wheel option with new advanced fiber and resin compounds allows for more intricately styled wheel choices, Ford said.

Ford spokesman Matt Leaver told Edmunds that pricing will be announced later.

This is the second Ford Performance vehicle to offer cabon-fiber wheels. They first debuted as standard equipment on the 2015 Shelby GT350R Mustang.

The GT wheels will be offered in two finishes, either a matte or a glossy clearcoat.

"Carbon-fiber wheels bring a wealth of advantages over traditional aluminum wheels, including weight savings, improved vehicle dynamics and ride quality," Ford said in a statement.

It is teaming up with supplier Carbon Revolution to develop the wheel.

Production of the Ford GT is limited to 250 units per year and the initial ordering period will cover 500 vehicles or the first two years of production.

Key competitors to the Ford GT include the Acura NSX, Audi R8 and McLaren P1.

Edmunds says: Expect this to be a must-have option on the highly anticipated Ford GT.
