2017 Ford Explorer XLT With Sport Appearance Package Bound for Dealerships This Summer

CHICAGO — The 2017 Ford Explorer SUV gets a fresh new look with the addition of the XLT Sport Appearance package. It will be offered at Ford dealerships this summer, following a debut at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show.

Pricing was not announced.

The cosmetic package does not add any mechanical upgrades.

It features a dark-accented exterior, including 20-inch Magnetic Gray wheels, grille, mirror caps and rear appliqué, along with Ebony Black body-side molding.

The cabin gets Dark Earth Gray front seats with leather bolsters and suede for inserts and door panels.

The treatment is designed to set the Explorer apart from its competitors, including the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Pathfinder.

"Exterior appearance is the No. 1 consideration in SUV purchase decisions," said Omar Odeh, Explorer brand marketing manager, in a statement. "The XLT Sport Appearance package is a dramatic offering that gives customers another attractive option."

The package beefs up the standard XLT model, which is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, push-button start, 10-way power driver seat, Sync 3 and LED foglamps.

The 2017 Ford Escape also will feature a Sport Appearance package, Ford said.

It will be available for Escape SE and Titanium models and feature several items, including 19-inch Ebony Black aluminum wheels and high-gloss upper grille.

The 2017 Escape arrives at dealerships this spring.

Escape competitors include the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and Toyota RAV4.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers will have six versions of the 2017 Explorer to choose from with the addition of this new package.
