2017 Audi R8 Spyder Revealed at the 2016 New York Auto Show

NEW YORK — The 2017 Audi R8 Spyder made its world debut at the 2016 New York Auto Show. The new Spyder is a soft-top version of the standard Audi R8.

According to Audi, the convertible top will retract in only 20 seconds. It can also be lowered while the vehicle is in motion at speeds up to 31 mph. The top itself will be available in black, red and brown.

A redesigned wind deflector is used that reduces turbulence in the cockpit by 90 percent, according to Audi.

Like the coupe, the R8 Spyder is powered by a 540-horsepower V10 engine. The standard gearbox is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Quattro all-wheel drive is also standard.

Audi says the Spyder will go from zero to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 197 mph.

A new performance leather steering wheel makes its debut on the R8 Spyder. It features buttons to start and stop the engine, adjust the drive mode and toggle the adjustable exhaust flaps. Sport seats with quilted leather are standard equipment, although more aggressively bolstered seats can be ordered as an option.

Edmunds says: Given the glorious sound of the V10 engine, it only makes sense to offer the R8 as a convertible.
