HERNDON, Virginia — The updated 2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron hatchback, a plug-in hybrid, arrives at Audi dealerships this fall with a $39,850 starting price.

The price reflects a $1,025 increase over the base 2016 A3 Sportback e-tron, due to the addition of new standard features, including a panoramic sunroof, rearview camera, LED daytime running lights and standard driver-assistance systems. They include Audi Pre Sense Basic and Audi Pre Sense Front systems.

The midrange 2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Premium Plus model is priced at $42,950, while the top-of-the-line Prestige model starts at $48,500.

All prices include a $950 destination charge.

The carryover powertrain features a 1.4-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to produce 204 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

Options include the Audi virtual cockpit with a power-meter screen that shows the range and consumption figures.

The EPA has not rated the 2017 A3 Sportback e-tron, which is available in all states.

The updated A3 Sportback e-tron debuts as gas prices are on the rise, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

The average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. on Wednesday is pegged at $2.22, compared to $2.13 a month ago.

Car shoppers in this segment also might consider the BMW i3, Chevrolet Volt, Ford C-Max Energi and Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers seeking a premium plug-in hybrid without breaking the bank might want to put the 2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron high on their consideration lists.
