2016 Volkswagen Passat Earns Five-Star Safety Rating From Federal Government

WASHINGTON — The refreshed 2016 Volkswagen Passat midsize sedan earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On sale now at Volkswagen dealerships, the 2016 Passat received four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

All 2016 Passats have rearview cameras, antilock brakes and electronic stability control as standard equipment. New driver-assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking, are standard features on some trim levels.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said the 2016 Passat earned its highest Top Safety Pick+ award. The Passat received "good" scores in all Institute crash tests.

Key Passat competitors include the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Kia Optima and Mazda 6.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers keeping score should note that the 2016 Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Mazda 6 also earned the highest five-star safety rating from NHTSA. The 2016 Kia Optima has not been rated.
