2016 Volkswagen Jetta Earns Five-Star Safety Rating From Federal Government

WASHINGTON — The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta Hybrid sedans earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On sale now at Volkswagen dealerships, the 2016 Jetta and Jetta Hybrid received four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

Standard safety equipment on all Jetta models includes six airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control and hydraulic brake assist.

Volkswagen's automatic post-collision braking system is new on all Jetta models for 2016.

The system applies the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors. The Jetta also includes Volkswagen's Intelligent Crash Response System that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors and switches on the hazard lights if the car is involved in certain types of crashes.

The 2016 Jetta TSI SEL, TSI and TDI SEL Premium models are available with an updated Driver Assistance package priced at $950 that adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, along with a blind-spot monitor with rear-traffic alert.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2016 Jetta as a 2015 Top Safety Pick+ award winner. The 2016 Jetta received "good" scores in all IIHS crash tests.

Key Jetta competitors include the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic and Mazda 3.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers keeping score should note that the 2016 Mazda 3 also earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze and Honda Civic have not been rated.
