2016 Toyota RAV4 Earns Five-Star Safety Rating From Federal Government

WASHINGTON — The 2016 Toyota RAV4 compact SUV earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On sale now at Toyota dealerships, the 2016 RAV4 received four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The rating applies to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the RAV4. NHTSA has not rated the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid.

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 RAV4 includes antilock brakes, vehicle stability control, traction control and daytime running lights. A blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on RAV4 SE and Limited models.

The RAV4 is equipped with eight airbags, including a driver's knee airbag and a front-passenger seat cushion airbag designed to prevent occupants from sliding under the seatbelt.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2016 RAV4 the 2016 Top Safety Pick+ rating. The RAV4 received "good" scores in all Institute crash tests.

Key RAV4 competitors include the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape and Honda CR-V.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers keeping score should note that the 2016 Honda CR-V also earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Escape earned a four-star overall safety rating.
