2016 Rolls-Royce Dawn Targets Younger, More Socially Aware Buyers


LONDON — The new 2016 Rolls-Royce Dawn convertible, which arrives at Rolls-Royce dealerships in the first quarter of 2016, is aimed at a "broader, younger and more socially aware audience," the automaker announced on Monday. The Dawn was unveiled ahead of a formal debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Pricing on the drop top, which the company calls "the sexiest Rolls-Royce ever built," was not announced.

"Contrary to media speculation, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is not a Wraith drophead," the company said in a statement. "Eighty percent of the exterior body panels of the new Dawn are newly designed (compared with the Wraith)."

The four-seat Dawn features a recessed front grille and prominent front bumper, along with a rear end that echoes the boattail designs of early Rolls-Royce convertibles. The fabric roof can be raised or lowered in 22 seconds.

Rolls-Royce said the convertible top operates in "complete silence" and at cruising speeds of up to 31 mph.

The decision to go with a fabric roof was based on "aesthetics, romance and brand appropriateness," Rolls-Royce said.

Under the hood is the same 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine found in the Wraith coupe and Ghost sedan. It delivers 571 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque. The Dawn sprints from zero to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Photos of the Dawn show it with a Midnight Sapphire exterior paired with a Mandarin leather interior.

Other details include a bespoke audio system with 16 speakers and a Spirit of Ecstasy rotary controller with a touchpad. The system recognizes handwritten characters in several languages, including Arabic and Mandarin.

Key competitors include the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante and Bentley Continental GT Speed.

Edmunds says: Ultra-luxury shoppers who want bragging rights to one of the most talked-about convertibles of the new model year will want to get a closer look at the Dawn.
