2016 Nissan Titan and Titan XD Gas Versions Roll Out in Spring

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Truck buyers will be able to order the 2016 Nissan Titan and Titan XD pickup trucks with a 5.6-liter direct-injection V8 gasoline engine, in addition to the 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 engine that's offered in the Titan XD, Nissan said on Wednesday.

The Tennessee-built V8 gas engine, dubbed "Endurance," is rated at 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a new seven-speed automatic transmission.

The Titan XD diesel model arrives at Nissan dealerships this month, followed by a rollout of the gasoline versions of the regular Titan and Titan XD in early spring.

Nissan has not announced Titan pricing. The towing and fuel economy ratings on the gasoline engine were not disclosed. The EPA has not rated the 2016 Titan.

The all-new V8 in the Titan is a major improvement over the V8 in the 2015 Titan. The outgoing version is rated at 317 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque.

The difference between Titan gasoline and diesel engine buyers is "very slight," according to Rich Miller, Nissan Titan chief product specialist.

Miller said offering two engines is all about "customer preference." It also helps to better position the Titan against its rivals, including the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra.

A new chapter in the ongoing Titan Truckumentary series, entitled "It's a Gas," heralded the latest Titan update.

Edmunds says: Truck buyers love choices, a key part of the Titan strategy for winning over a coveted slice of the market.
