CYPRESS, California — Car shoppers got their first look at the redesigned 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander on Monday as the Japanese automaker released two shadowy images of the SUV ahead of a world debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show.
The images hint at a redone front end with a new nose.
The 2016 Outlander arrives at Mitsubishi dealerships in July. The long-awaited 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid model will arrive at dealerships in spring 2016.
"The 2016 Outlander will be the first Mitsubishi vehicle to debut the brand's new design language," Mitsubishi said in a statement.
It added: "The 2016 Outlander is a refined crossover utility vehicle that features over 100 engineering and design improvements, including a new, powerful and dynamic appearance, enhanced road performance as a result of improvements to noise levels, ride, handling and throttle response, and a more eloquent, yet functional, interior space."
Mitsubishi's next Outlander will ride on the same platform and have the same engines and transmissions as the current model.
The seven-passenger 2015 Outlander offers two powertrain choices. They are a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission and a 3.0-liter V6 engine linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. The two engines will receive more tuning for the 2016 model year to gain better fuel economy.
Mitsubishi expects to hold the line on 2016 Outlander pricing.
Edmunds says: This will be a key unveiling for car shoppers in the market for a stylish SUV this summer.
