2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG 4Matic Coupe Arrives at Dealerships Next Summer

STUTTGART, Germany — The new 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG 4Matic Coupe, described by the automaker as an SUV in the E-Class coupe segment, arrives at U.S. Mercedes-Benz dealerships in late summer 2015, the automaker said on Tuesday.

U.S. pricing has not been announced on the GLE 450 AMG 4Matic Coupe.

Mercedes-Benz is hoping to find some uncharted territory in the market by pitching the five-passenger GLE Coupe as a cross between a coupe and an SUV.

"Despite the similarity to an SUV with its raised seating position and expansive all-around view, the occupants are led to believe that they are in sports rather than off-road mode," Mercedes-Benz said.

The German automaker said the BMW X6 SUV is the main competitor to the GLE Coupe. But car shoppers are also expected to consider the Audi Q7, Land Rover Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne as well.

U.S. consumers can also expect a Mercedes-AMG variant of the GLE Coupe.

In the meantime, car shoppers who are making long-range plans for some luxury-vehicle shopping can take note of the newly released details on the GLE 450 AMG 4Matic Coupe.

The 2016 GLE 450 AMG 4Matic is equipped with a 362-horsepower biturbo V6 engine linked to a standard 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive.

Standard features include a dynamic handling control system, a power tailgate and crosswind assist. AMG body styling includes a rear spoiler lip painted in the vehicle color and 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels.

The cabin is equipped with standard AMG sports seats and a three-spoke AMG sports steering wheel.

A generous list of safety features includes active blind spot assist and active lane keeping assist.

Daimler recently detailed a new renaming strategy for Mercedes-Benz. For example, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class or ML will be renamed the Mercedes-Benz GLE.

Edmunds says: Your Mercedes-Benz dealer will have a sportier "SUV" choice in the showroom next summer.
