IRVINE, California — Car shoppers awaiting the showroom debut of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata got some encouraging news from Mazda North America Operations, as it announces the "imminent arrival" of the convertible at U.S. Mazda dealers.
Production of the North America-bound MX-5 Miata began on Monday.
Full pricing on the 2016 MX-5 Miata was announced at the same time.
Mazda will kick off U.S. sales of the 2016 MX-5 Miata with online pre-orders of a special Launch Edition of 1,000 cars starting at 9 a.m. PDT on May 5.
The MX-5 Launch Edition with a six-speed manual transmission starts at $31,315, including an $820 destination charge. A Launch Edition with a six-speed automatic transmission starts at $32,390, including shipping.
All Launch Edition MX-5s will come in Soul Red with a Sport Tan leather interior. Other details include 17-inch alloy wheels, heated seats, automatic climate control, SiriusXM satellite radio and a Bose nine-speaker audio system.

The base 2016 MX-5 Sport starts at $25,735, including shipping. The pricing reflects a $945 increase over the base 2015 MX-5 Miata.
An automatic transmission is a $1,075 option. The 2016 MX-5 Sport includes a six-speed manual transmission, cruise control, LED headlights, Bluetooth and leather-wrapped shift knob.
The midlevel MX-5 Club starts at $29,420 and adds more equipment, including 17-inch gunmetal alloy wheels, a front airdam and a trunk-mounted rear lip spoiler. A $3,400 package adds BBS 17-inch wheels, Brembo front brake rotors and calipers, aerodynamic side sill extensions and a rear bumper skirt.
The top-of-the-line MX-5 Grand Touring is priced at $30,885, including shipping. Details include 17-inch bright alloy wheels, leather-trimmed heated seats and automatic climate control.
