IRVINE, California — The redesigned 2016 Kia Optima midsize sedan was unveiled on Wednesday ahead of a formal debut on April 1 at the 2015 New York Auto Show.

Previously, car shoppers only were able to study renderings of the Optima. A single photo of the 2016 Optima SX shows a sleek redesign with a tiger-nose grille.

"Available with multiple engine choices, the all-new Optima features a more spacious interior, class-up premium features and a number of technologies not previously offered on Kia's best-selling midsize sedan," said Kia Motors America in a statement.

No further details were provided.

The 2016 Optima will arrive at Kia dealerships later this year.

The Optima has been Kia's No. 1 selling vehicle in the U.S., with buyers attracted to its premium look and affordable base price. The base 2015 Kia Optima LX starts at $22,515, including an $825 destination charge.

Key competitors to the Optima include the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat.
