Five stars is the highest rating.
On sale now at Jeep dealerships, the carryover 2016 Patriot received three stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and three stars in the rollover crash test.
The rating applies to two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions of the Patriot.
Standard safety features include six airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, hill-start assist and antilock brakes. A rearview camera is optional.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said the 2016 Patriot earned "good" ratings in all crash tests, except for the small overlap front crash test. The Patriot earned a "poor" rating in that test, which is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.
Edmunds says: Car shoppers keeping score should note that the 2016 Subaru Forester earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport earned a four-star overall safety rating and the 2016 Kia Sportage earned a mixed rating. The 2016 Sportage all-wheel-drive model received the highest five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, while the front-wheel-drive model earned a four-star rating.
