MAHWAH, New Jersey The 2017 Jaguar XE compact sedan, a new offering from Jag, was revealed in London today.

The performance-oriented XE S, a top-of-the-line model, took center stage during the unveiling.

Key rivals include the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but the 3 Series, with its huge volumes, is clearly the main target. The XE slots in below the Jaguar XF and XJ models.

The 2017 Jaguar XE arrives at U.S. dealerships in 2016. U.S. pricing has not been announced.

The XE S features a 340-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds, according to the automaker. The engine is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift controls.

It has a top speed of 155 mph.

The XE S features a rear-wheel-drive layout, but Jaguar said the car has the "capability of accepting all-wheel drive."

Exterior design cues on the S model include large front air intakes, chrome side vents, a "discreet" rear spoiler and optional 20-inch forged alloy wheels.

This is the first Jaguar car built on the company's new aluminum architecture that was featured in the Jaguar C-X17 concept car in 2013.

In another first, the XE also is equipped with electric power steering.

"This system is tuned to provide responsiveness and excellent feel, and offers improved efficiency over hydraulic systems," the company said in a statement.

The cabin features Jaguar F-Type-style dials, a variety of trim choices — including textured aluminum — and optional ambient lighting. A laser head-up display is another option.

Jaguar said an intuitive new InControl infotainment system, with Bluetooth, audio streaming and USB connectivity, will be available.

Optional high-tech safety systems include adaptive cruise control, closing vehicle sensing, blind-spot monitoring, semi-automated parallel and perpendicular parking and reverse traffic detection.

"Details on the Jaguar XE U.S. model line will be announced with the car is launched in 2016," the automaker said.

Edmunds says: This reveal is designed to whet the appetites of U.S. car shoppers, who will have to wait for specific details on the Jaguar XE models headed here.
