2016 Jaguar F-Pace Teased Ahead of Full Reveal Later This Year

MAHWAH, New Jersey — Car shoppers got their first good look at a lightly camouflaged production version of the 2016 Jaguar F-Pace in action when it debuted on Tuesday as a Tour de France support vehicle. The F-Pace is the British brand's first crossover SUV.

To underscore the family-hauling capability of the F-Pace, Jaguar said the prototype version of the crossover was loaded with "drinks, energy gels, clothing, tools and spares for the bike."

The automaker said the crossover is "due to be revealed later in the year and is in its final stages of development." The F-Pace was previewed at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

The production version bears a strong resemblance to the Jaguar C-X17 concept and is built on Jaguar's new lightweight aluminum platform.

Part of the recent testing included sending the prototype to Team Sky rider Chris Froome's training camp for some "real world" exercises. The special camouflage is inspired by the Tour de France and road-racing bikes.

The five-passenger F-Pace targets a growing list of luxury crossovers, including the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Cadillac SRX, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and Lexus RX 350.

Jaguar is emphasizing the "practical" aspects of the F-Pace, including interior space.

Pricing, technical specifications and specific U.S. launch timing were not disclosed at this point.

Edmunds says: Crossover shoppers making long-range plans get a better idea of what to expect with this exciting new offering bound for Jaguar showrooms next year.
