WASHINGTON — The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUV earned the highest five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On sale now at Hyundai dealerships, the 2016 Santa Fe Sport received five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The rating applies to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the Santa Fe Sport.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not rated the 2016 Santa Fe Sport.

Standard safety equipment on the Santa Fe Sport includes electronic stability control, traction control, antilock brakes and seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag.

Key Santa Fe Sport rivals include the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers keeping score should note that the 2016 Toyota RAV4 also earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Escape earned a four-star overall safety rating.
