2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special To Debut on May 11

DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special will debut on May 11.

"The California Special package is just one of the new packages available on the 2016 Mustang that we know fans of the Mustang brand will love," the automaker said in an e-mailed statement.

While no details — except for a photo of the car's badge — were available, the special package is expected to feature unique paint options and other appearance tweaks. Pricing and order information has not been provided at this point.

Ford has not confirmed whether the special package will roll out on coupe and convertible models.

California Ford dealers rolled out a limited-edition Mustang California Special in 1968. The iconic package has appeared throughout Mustang history, most recently on the 2014 model.

The California Special teaser comes a little more than a week before General Motors is set for a splashy public reveal of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in Detroit.

The Mustang also competes with the Dodge Challenger and Nissan 370Z.

Edmunds says: The Mustang GT California Special is sure to lure shoppers into showrooms.
