2016 Ford Explorer Appeals to Millennial Buyers, Women

DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2016 Ford Explorer midsize SUV is the most popular Ford SUV with millennial buyers ages 25 to 34, Ford said on Monday.

The needs of millennial buyers are changing as they form families, the automaker said.

On sale now at Ford dealerships, the Explorer targets the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Pathfinder.

"Explorer provides the space those families need today and tomorrow, while maintaining the image they want to project," said Erich Merkle, Ford U.S. sales analyst, in a statement.

The analysis is based on the most recent personal new vehicle registrations in the U.S. from IHS Automotive.

Millennial shoppers aren't the only ones considering the Explorer.

"Explorer has become a hot seller with women," Ford noted. "Explorer is the most preferred midsize SUV among women buyers, according to IHS personal registration data."

Ford said sales of its SUVs, including the Ford Escape and Ford Edge, are off to their best calendar year start in history.

Edmunds says: Millennial car shoppers are entering a new life stage and moving into bigger vehicles, according to this new report from Ford.
