2016 Cadillac CT6 Flagship Sedan Heralds New Naming Strategy for Brand

Just the Facts:
  • The all-new 2016 Cadillac CT6 flagship sedan will launch in late 2015.
  • The CT6 heralds the beginning of a new naming strategy for Cadillac.
  • "The name indicates a coming shift to a simplified naming convention for future Cadillac models," the automaker said in a statement.

DETROIT Cadillac said on Wednesday that its all-new flagship sedan will be named CT6 when it arrives late next year.

The rear-wheel-drive 2016 CT6 heralds the beginning of a new naming strategy for Cadillac.

"The name indicates a coming shift to a simplified naming convention for future Cadillac models," the automaker said in a statement. "Under this strategy, familiar lettering like 'CT' would be used for car models, with the number indicating the relative size and position of the cars in the hierarchy of Cadillac models."

The strategy is designed to help car shoppers because it will place "the cars within a structure, as they compare cars both within our showrooms and across the market generally," GM said.

It is unclear how Cadillac will name its crossovers and SUVs under the new naming strategy.

The new Cadillac is expected to compete with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Pricing on the CT6 has not been announced. The car is positioned above the Cadillac CTS and XTS.

GM has released few details about the CT6, but it said the sedan "uses advanced, lightweight materials and new body construction techniques to reduce fuel consumption while enhancing driving dynamics and safety."

The CT6 will be built at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant. The plant also builds the Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR.

Edmunds says: Hard to tell if the new naming strategy will help or hurt Cadilac's fortunes at this point, but the new flagship sedan sounds like it's shaping up well.
