The rating applies to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the Regal, which is expected to arrive at Buick dealerships this summer.
Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Regal includes a rearview camera and six airbags. Premium II and GS models feature rear-seat thorax airbags, for a total of eight standard airbags.
Other standard safety features include stability control, traction control and antilock brakes. Front and rear park assist is standard on the Regal GS.
Optional safety features include lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision alert and side blind-zone alert.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not rated the 2016 Regal.
Edmunds says: Car shoppers should note that the 2016 Audi A4, Lincoln MKZ and Volvo S60 also earned the top five-star safety rating from NHTSA.
