ARLINGTON, Virginia The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta sedan earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick+ award following structural improvements and the addition of an optional front crash prevention system.

Jettas with the optional forward collision warning system qualify for the Top Safety Pick+ award.

“In the test, the driver’s space was maintained well, and measures taken from the dummy in the driver seat indicated a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of the same severity," said the Institute in a statement on Thursday.

The 2015 Jetta, which competes with the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Mazda 3, is on sale now.

The Volkswagen Jetta’s A-pillars and door sills were strengthened for the new model year. The car did not receive a full redesign. The structural changes improved the Jetta’s performance in the small overlap crash test. The crash replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or a utility pole.

"As a result, the Jetta’s small overlap rating improved to good, compared with the marginal rating of earlier models," the Institute said.

Standard safety equipment on the 2015 Jetta includes electronic stability control, six airbags, antilock brakes and hydraulic brake assist.

The 2015 Jetta earned the top five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Edmunds says: Some reassuring safety news for car shoppers considering the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta.
