The Golf R arrives at Volkswagen dealerships in the first quarter of 2015 in four-door form only and initially with the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The first 500 Golf R models will be the top-of-the-line Golf R with the DCC adaptive damping system and a navigation system. All cars will be painted Lapiz Blue Metallic and feature the 292-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This version starts at $39,910, including an $820 destination charge.
The first 500 owners will also get a special Volkswagen Driver Gear R accessory kit. It includes a Volkswagen R watch, keychain and a serialized, VIN-specific certificate.
The pre-order customers must pay a $500 reservation fee that will be applied toward the purchase of the Golf R. The fee is fully refundable.
Once all 500 vehicles are claimed, a waiting list will open up for the car.
Edmunds says: Expect enthusiasts to snap these up quickly, so make your plans now.
