2015 Volkswagen Golf, Ford F-150 Win North American Car/Truck of the Year Awards

DETROIT — The redesigned 2015 Ford F-150 pickup and 2015 Volkswagen Golf hatchback were named the 2015 North American Car and Truck of the Year at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

The awards are picked by a panel of automotive journalists, including Edmunds.com's Scott Oldham and Erin Riches.

The Golf defeated the 2015 Ford Mustang and Hyundai Genesis to grab the top car prize.

Ford's F-150 came out on top against the 2015 Lincoln MKC and Chevrolet Colorado.

The 2015 F-150 features an aluminum-alloy body and high-strength steel frame. It is on sale now at Ford dealerships.

"Ford is honored to be named the best among such a strong field of competitors," said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas, in a statement. "Ford employees and customers have a lot to be proud of with the innovative and award-winning F-150."

VW Golf variants, TSI, TDI and GTI, were "recognized for setting new benchmarks in their segments, including innovation, distinguished design and available driver-assistance features, as well as unmatched value," said Volkswagen of America in a statement.

The 2015 Golf is on sale now at Volkswagen dealerships.

The vehicles are judged in a number of categories, including innovation, design, safety, handling, comfort, value and driver satisfaction.

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was the 2014 North American Car of the Year. The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado was the 2014 North American Truck of the Year.

Edmunds says: These awards are important for car shoppers because they provide invaluable input from auto journalists who are test-driving new cars and trucks every day of the year.
