MIDDLEBURG, Virginia — The 2015 Volkswagen Eos Final Edition starts at $40,030, including an $865 destination charge, as the hardtop convertible comes to the end of the road.

"Eos was coming to the end of its life-cycle so we made the decision not to continue it," Joerg Sommer, Volkswagen of America vice president of product marketing and strategy, told Edmunds.

Sommer said the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible will be the only convertible model in the Volkswagen line.

The 2015 Eos is on sale now at VW dealerships. Production will end in the spring.

The base 2015 Volkswagen Eos Komfort starts at $36,660, including shipping.

VW's top-of-the-line 2015 Eos Executive starts at $43,200, including shipping.

The Eos Final Edition features 18-inch Vicenza wheels, Cornsilk Beige and black two-tone Vienna leather seating surfaces, contrast stitching, silver net interior trim, a rearview camera and rain-sensing wipers.

Sommer explained that the decision to discontinue the Eos "is the recognition of where the market is growing."

He added: "In the end, even on a group level, we have almost too many convertibles. They are all attractive, but in the end we'd rather focus on those segments that are growing."

The Volkswagen Group is made up of Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, Lamborghini, Porsche, Volkswagen and other brands that are not sold in the U.S.

U.S. Eos sales have been disappointing since they peaked in 2008 at nearly 13,000 cars. Last year about 4,200 cars were sold. The Eos is the only retractable hardtop convertible sold in North America that is equipped with a power-operated sunroof.

For drivers who enjoy the open air, Sommer said: "We have an attractive offering with the Beetle convertible. We bring it down to a very affordable level."

The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle starts at $26,165, including an $820 destination charge.

Competitors to the Volkswagen Eos include the Audi TTS, BMW Z4 and Mini Cooper convertible.

Edmunds says: It's time to head to your VW dealer if you want to get your hands on the last Volkswagen Eos.
