2015 Tesla Model S Earns Five-Star Safety Rating From Federal Government

WASHINGTON — The 2015 Tesla Model S electric sedan earned the top five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2015 Model S received five stars in the front, side and rollover crashworthiness tests. Approximately 1 percent of all cars tested by the federal government achieve five stars across the board.

Standard safety equipment includes eight airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, antilock brakes and a lane-departure warning system. In the event of an accident, the battery system automatically disconnects the main power source.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not rated the 2015 Model S.

Key competitors to the Model S include the BMW i3, BMW i8, Cadillac ELR and Lexus GS 450h.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers should note that the 2015 BMW i3 and i8, Cadillac ELR and Lexus GS 450h have not been rated yet by NHTSA.
