ORLANDO, Florida — The 2015 Tesla Model S 70D electric sedan won the 2016 AAA Green Car of the Year award, as the motoring organization noted that car shoppers now are offered a "growing selection" of environmentally friendly vehicles.
The Model S 70D was praised for its 240-mile range, room for five, excellent power and steering and fast-charge capability, AAA said.
If no significant changes were made to the powertrain in 2016, AAA used the prior model year's results in determining the winner.
Other 2016 winners include the 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Premium hatchback, 2014 BMW i3 electric hatchback, 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium wagon and 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf SEL Premium hatchback.
"Car shoppers can choose high-quality, zero-to-low-emission vehicles in a growing selection of body type and size and price," said Megan McKernan, manager of the AAA Automotive Research Center in a statement.
Complete results are published in the 2016 AAA Green Car Guide, which is available to AAA members for free at select AAA branches while supplies last.
Edmunds says: You should note that AAA's top three green vehicles — the Tesla Model S 70D, BMW i3 and Volkswagen e-Golf SEL Premium — are all electrics.
