AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The new 2015 Ram ProMaster City compact commercial van will arrive at U.S. dealerships by the end of 2014, Chrysler announced on Thursday.
The Ram ProMaster City will be offered in two-seat Tradesman cargo van and five-seat passenger Wagon configurations.
The newest member of the Ram family competes in an increasingly crowded commercial segment that includes the 2014 Nissan NV200, 2015 Chevrolet City Express and 2015 Ford Transit Connect. The ProMaster City, which is spun off the Fiat Doblo, will be assembled in Bursa, Turkey.
A front-wheel-drive unibody vehicle with an independent rear suspension, the ProMaster City sets itself apart from the competition with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
"The ProMaster City is the first commercial van to feature a nine-speed automatic and one of the first vehicles to be so equipped in automotive history," Chrysler said in a statement.
Chrysler's van is equipped with a 178-horsepower 2.4-liter Tigershark inline four-cylinder engine. The powertrain combination is expected to deliver best-in-class fuel economy, according to Chrysler. But the automaker did not release fuel economy estimates.
Payload capacity is pegged at 1,883 pounds.
Pricing has not been announced.
"Although they will arrive in dealers by the end of the year, you can expect to see volumes in the first quarter of 2015," Chrysler spokesman Nick Cappa told Edmunds.
The cabin of the Ram ProMaster City Tradesman and SLT is patterned after a toolbox, with a simple black-and-gray look.
The ProMaster City includes standard electronic stability control and 60/40 split swing doors. Options include a rearview camera.
Edmunds says: Chrysler shakes up the compact commercial van segment with the new 2015 Ram ProMaster City. Car shoppers will appreciate the growing number of choices on the market.
