2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 and C400 4Matic Recalled for Power Steering Assist Problem

WASHINGTON Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 28,452 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 and C400 4Matic sedans because they may have a loss of electric power steering assist, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash," said NHTSA in its recall summary.

The problem is due to a software design issue at a supplier, the automaker told federal safety regulators.

There are no injuries or crashes linked to the recall, Mercedes-Benz said.

The driver is made aware of the electric power steering deactivation by a red warning message in the instrument cluster.

The affected vehicles were built from January 27, 2014 to December 1, 2014.

Mercedes-Benz dealers will update the power steering software. The recall will begin sometime in January. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

Edmunds says: Owners of these cars can either wait for their official recall notice or stay in touch with their dealer for further information about the recall.
