SINDELFINGEN, Germany — The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which is set for a debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, gets put through its paces by Michael Schumacher, the legendary Formula 1 world champion and brand ambassador for Mercedes-Benz.

Schumacher touts the assistance systems in the redesigned C-Class and appears to give his blessing to some self-driving features.

"Nobody is able to give 100 percent concentration all the time over a longer period to cope with the car and traffic situation," Schumacher said in a statement. "Sometimes just a moment of inattention is enough. And that is precisely why I support intelligent assistance systems for passenger cars."

The 2015 C-Class, which competes with the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series , is set to go on sale in the U.S. next fall. It will be built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Schumacher is a development partner for Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive. This is the name given by the company to the car's networked assistance system.

The 2015 C-Class will get new assistance systems and "significantly extended functions," according to the automaker. The systems rely on a new stereo camera and multi-stage radar sensors.

Edmunds says: Even the best can benefit from technological assistance, according to a particularly credible source.
