TORRANCE, California — Lexus has turned to crowdsourcing to get some help naming a new color for the 2015 RC F sports coupe.
When it was introduced at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January, the RC F was painted Ultrasonic Blue, a striking, but traditional Lexus color. Now the manufacturer has developed a vibrant new color — an attention-getting metallic orange — to match the dynamic lines of its latest high-performance offering.
Lexus posted a picture of an orange 2015 RC F on its Facebook page and is asking fans to come up with catchy names for the intense hue. So far, the page has gotten more than 13,000 "Likes" and better than 15,000 name suggestions.
Just a few examples: Tangerine Flame, Solar Flare, Radiant Fire, Blood Orange, Fireburst, Blazing Sunset, Inferno Orange, Amber Blaze, Citrus Fire, Arizona Sunrise, Mango Rage, Sunset Eclipse, Clockwork Orange, Atomic Tangerine and Orange Is the new Black.
Not surprisingly, some fans took the opportunity to express opinions, both positive and negative. "Burning desire," wrote one, "because that's what I have for this car." Other suggestions included "I-Ate-Too-Much-Cheetos-Orange" and "Spiced Vomit." Finally, one poster tried to put the matter to rest: "Orange. Bam, problem solved."
The 2015 Lexus RC F is sure to make a splash when it goes on sale this fall, regardless of paint scheme or the name chosen for the new color. The curvaceous sports coupe features cooling ducts and aerodynamic cues from the famous Lexus LFA supercar, as well as an active carbon-fiber rear spoiler that deploys at 50 mph for increased grip.
The RC F is propelled by a 5.0-liter normally aspirated V8 engine that produces more than 450 horsepower and more than 383 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful V8 ever produced by Lexus.
No official contest has been announced for naming the new orange, so it's unlikely that anyone will walk off with a major award, like a 2015 Lexus RC F. But if your color is chosen, at least you'll have bragging rights.
Edmunds says: So far, crowdsourcing has turned up some great suggestions, but we're kind of partial to "Clockwork Orange."
