IRVINE, California — Car shoppers considering the 2015 Kia Optima can go up against NBA star Blake Griffin in a virtual stare-down contest, a new addition to the marketing campaign for the midsize sedan.
The "Blink Griffin" campaign pits users against one of two opponents: Griffin decked out as a cowboy or as a fighter pilot. These are two of the characters he plays in the Optima's new TV commercials.
"Howdy," says Griffin. "You hankering for a staring showdown?"
Users are then directed to set up their Web cam and play for a spot on the leaderboard.
The interactive site recognizes and responds to blinks.
Kia is in the midst of rolling out the new Optima ad campaign starring Griffin as the lead actor in big-budget action movies set in the Old West, ancient Rome and an aircraft carrier. The premise of the commercials is that instead of arriving on a horse, in a chariot or fighter jet, Griffin improvises and arrives in the Optima.
Edmunds says: Kia uses blinking tech to catch the eye of car shoppers in this crowded segment.
