WASHINGTON The 2015 GMC Acadia SUV earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Acadia received five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test. The rating applies to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the Acadia.

The rating also applies to the 2015 GMC Acadia Denali.

Five stars is the highest rating.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not rated the 2015 Acadia.

Standard safety equipment on the Acadia includes antilock brakes, electronic stability control and a rearview camera. Side blind-zone alert and cross-traffic alert are standard on the Acadia Denali and SLT-2.

Key competitors to the Acadia include the Dodge Durango, Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers should be aware that the 2015 Toyota Highlander also scored a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. The 2015 Honda Pilot earned a four-star overall safety rating and the 2015 Dodge Durango has not been rated yet.
