DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2015 Ford Mustang will feature an innovative knee airbag mounted in the glovebox for the front-seat passenger, the automaker said on Thursday.
The knee airbag will debut later this year on the Mustang as part of a standard safety system.
The new airbag is made up of a pliable bladder between the inner and outer glovebox door panels. In a crash, the glovebox outer door panel extends out and cushions the passenger's legs in a manner similar to a traditional fabric airbag.
The 2015 Mustang will feature eight airbags, twice as many as the current model.
In addition to the glovebox knee airbag, the redesigned Mustang fastback and convertible have driver and passenger front and seat-mounted side airbags, as well as a driver knee airbag. The fastback adds two side curtain airbags, while the convertible gets a seat-mounted head airbag on each side.
In developing the new Mustang passenger knee airbag, Ford has been granted 15 U.S. patents.
"With this innovative airbag design, we have developed technology that provides protection for vehicle occupants while also reducing weight and enabling greater design flexibility," said Sean West, Ford restraints manager, in a statement.
The 2015 Mustang has not been crash-tested yet by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
NHTSA has not commented on the new Ford knee airbag, but noted: "Injuries to the knee-thigh-hip complex are a frequent, debilitating, and expensive consequence of automobile crashes."
Edmunds says: Ford shakes up the competition with this new safety feature on the 2015 Mustang. It wouldn't be surprising to see this feature eventually make its way into other Ford vehicles.
