STERLING HEIGHTS, Michigan Production of the 2015 Chrysler 200 kicked off on Friday, with workers reciting a pledge to improve morale and quality inside the plant.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 arrives at dealerships in late spring. The Chrysler 200 starts at $22,695, including a $995 destination charge.

The automaker has invested nearly $1 billion in the Michigan factory that builds the midsize sedan and added 800 jobs to support production.

The Sterling Heights Assembly Plant was slated for closure just a few years ago. But a grassroots campaign to save it sprang up.

"You have demonstrated a passion to deliver great products for our customers," said Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne.

Employees embraced an "I Believe" theme, including the recitation of the "I Believe" pledge.

The Chrysler 200 competes in a crowded segment that includes the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry.
