DETROIT — The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Special Service Vehicle is the police version of the popular Silverado full-size pickup truck.

It goes on sale this summer. Pricing was not announced.

The special model comes with a high-output alternator and a big auxiliary battery to allow officers to operate lights and other equipment while parked with the engine turned off, Chevrolet said on Tuesday.

The Silverado SSV is equipped with the same 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine that other buyers get.

But special options include a vinyl rear seat, a flasher system and an open center console space for police equipment.

Chevrolet also sells special versions of the Chevrolet SS sedan, renamed Caprice, for use by police departments. The Caprice police vehicle includes a surveillance mode that allows cut-off of lights for undercover work.

Other vehicles in the Chevy police lineup include the Chevrolet Impala Police Vehicle, Chevrolet Tahoe Special Service and Chevrolet Express Prisoner Transport Van.

Edmunds says: This is the first police version of the Silverado. Don't be surprised if you see it in your rearview mirror.
