DETROIT Nervous owners of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray sports car can order an improved valet mode that can record video, audio and telemetry while the car is in the hands of the parking-lot attendant, GM said on Monday.

The feature is part of a $1,795 options package that bundles a navigation system and Performance Data Recorder. Valet Mode with the Performance Data Recorder will be available on all 2015 Corvette models.

The 2015 Corvette Stingray arrives at dealerships in September.

"We expect about half of Corvette buyers to choose this feature," said Monte Doran, a Chevrolet spokesman, in a phone conversation with Edmunds.

Doran said many Corvette owners remember the "seminal" 1986 movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which included a nightmarish valet joyride.

"You know what can happen to your car when you turn over the keys," Doran said.

GM said in a statement that the upgraded Valet Mode is a "baby monitor for your baby."

"Performance Data Recorder was initially designed as a tool for track days, allowing drivers to record their laps and improve their driving skills," said Harlan Charles, Corvette product manager, in a statement. "We soon realized the system could have many more applications, such as recording a scenic drive up Highway 101 or recording when the valet mode is activated."

All 2015 Corvettes get the basic valet mode, a carryover feature. Basic valet mode locks the center display screen and glovebox and disables the entertainment system. It is turned on through the settings menu and activated by a four-digit code.

Key competitors to the Corvette include the Audi R8 and Porsche 911.

Edmunds says: Note to valets: The memory card for valet mode is tucked into the electronically locking glovebox. In other words, it's virtually impossible to defeat the system.
