WASHINGTON — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling 8,561 2015-'16 Jeep Renegade SUVs in the U.S. because of a problem with the optional trailer-hitch package, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The trailer-hitch assembly may have been attached with only a single fastener per side, not three per side as required," the NHTSA said in its recall summary. "Without the proper number of fasteners, the trailer-hitch assembly may separate from the vehicle, and any towed vehicle may no longer be properly connected, increasing the risk of a crash."
There are no injuries or accidents linked to the recall as of July 15, 2016, the automaker told federal safety regulators.
Owners of these vehicles may notice a rattling noise coming from the rear of the vehicle while driving.
The affected Renegade SUVs were built from August 25, 2014, to June 25, 2016.
Edmunds says: Jeep dealers will install two additional fasteners per side. A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Fiat Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
