The Passat earned the Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2014 Passat received "good" ratings in all IIHS crash tests and an "acceptable" rating in the small overlap front crash test. That test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

Standard safety equipment on the Passat includes antilock brakes and electronic stability control. A rearview camera, which helps to prevent back-over accidents, is now standard on SE and higher trims.
